Miller, Pepper
Pepper Miller is a recognized researcher, author, thought leader and Black-American subject matter expert.
She founded The Hunter Miller Group (HMG), in 1995, a Chicago based, leading edge market research and strategic firm. Since then, Pepper has been helping Fortune 500 companies better understand and positively engage Black America, so that they can have loyal customers and a positive bottom line.
Some of these clients include AARP, Bravo, CNN, McDonald’s, Procter & Gamble, Unilever, Walgreens, US Bank, The Chicago Symphony Orchestra and more.
Pepper co-authored with the late Herb Kemp What’s Black About It? and her book, Black Still Matters in Marketing. Both books are considered to be the most important references about Black consumer insights by many business leaders in the marketing industry. Pepper’s third book, LET ME EXPLAIN BLACK AGAIN: Exploring Blind Spots & Black Insights for Marketing and Understanding Black Culture & Perspectives will be released April of 2023.
Pepper is able to help audiences think differently about Black America, and dig deeper into the Black-American psyche by talking about both simple ideas and taboo topics. It’s this ability that earned Pepper several awards i.e. the Insights Association Laureate Recognition (2021), MOBE Spirit of D. Park Gibson Award for Excellence in Market Research (2018), Target Market News’ MAAX Award for Market Research Executive of the Year (2007); MAFA Trailblazer Award (2014), the “Takes the Cake” Best Speaker award twice from the prestigious Marketing 2 Women Conference 2006 and 2012, and countless accolades and recognition of appreciation.
Pepper is a mentor to OverIndex – founded by market research executives, Alexandrea Davis and Erica Williams. OverIndex is a community of Black Market Researchers and Strategists who are seeking research and strategy opportunities while tackling systematic issues in this industry. Our overarching objective is to encourage the market research industry to be more inclusive so that Who is doing the research and How research is being done, become relevant approaches within the industry. She also established the Ruth C. Hunter Market Research Scholarship Fund to increase awareness about market research among Black Americans and to encourage Black-American students to consider market research as a career option.
Pepper is a founding blogger for Advertising Age’s Big Tent multicultural blog, and she has written for Forbes. She enjoys engaging with and mentoring young professionals. She also served as a research consultant for the largest study about African Americans to date; the Black America Today segmentation study – commissioned by Radio One and conducted by Yankelovich. The study was launched June 2008.
In July 2007 Pepper received the Target Market News MAAX Award for 2007 Research Executive of the Year.
Pepper has been an invited guest speaker at many corporations including Procter & Gamble, General Mills, Colgate, ConAgra, Coors, GlaxoSmithKline, Home Depot, and Macy’s. She has been a keynote speaker at industry events and often speaks to students at colleges and universities.
